Trying to capture the enigmatic mind of a man whose process for creation is subterranean isolation is like trying to capture lightning in a bottle on a day with bright blue skies. What is known is the blatantly obvious: his abstract medium is black, white, and red all over. What isn't known is the depths of his pain from which he draws inspiration for his philosophical expressions of his soul. To ease the perceiver of his art into a consciousness of open understanding, Joseph graces us with a small write-up of his own. Not to hold the hand of the viewer and explain to them what the piece means, but to provide a guide that vaguely specifies intention and leaves room for interpretation.
With the last of Swain's pieces selling at a private, invitation-only auction in the heart of New York City, an online gallery is a rare glimpse into not only the collection of finished pieces but also the personal interpretations and their availability.
Joseph does not believe in prints, duplications, or reproductions of his pieces. Everything is an original. Everything is a one of one.
